Adaptive Assessments

An adaptive assessment is a type of evaluation process, which, when completed, will provide you with specific technology to help you communicate, continue your education or further your career.

The evaluation is broken-up into a two part process. During the first part, the evaluation consists of ACT team members talking to you about your current abilities, concerns and goals. Next, the focus is on what type of product is needed to help you successfully accomplish that goal. Each assessment includes a summary recommendation, which outlines learning objectives that match your academic and/or vocational goals.

The initial screening for the assessment includes:

  • Medical information relating to your disability.
  • Goals for your education, career and/or daily activities.
  • Currently identified barriers.
  • Computing skills.
  • Available computing resources.

Note: Assessments are confidential.

Assessments are by appointment only and are held at the ACT Center, located in Memorial Union at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Each assessment runs approximately 1.5 to 2 hours long.

Product Demonstration

For the second part of the evaluation, the ACT Center staff may demonstrate adaptive software and/or hardware, which would be beneficial to the specific goal in mind. If the software or hardware will work for your needs, then you will be asked to try the product as well.

Systems Recommendations

Many assessments result in a computer system recommendation for the purchase of supplemental software and/or peripheral devices. Along with your assessment and specific software/hardware recommendations, the ACT staff will:

  • Suggest ideas for your personal computing environment.
  • Suggest ideas for the specific computing facilities you use on campus.

Post-Assessment Report

As a wrap-up, a report is written, based upon the initial screening and the recommendations. You and your counselor will receive a copy of the full report.

You will continue to communicate with your counselor for any products purchased or training recommended.

Fees

Assessment fees for MU students, faculty and staff are at no charge.

Assessment fees for clients outside of MU are $45 per hour.
