Technology for Vision

The ACT Center has adaptive software and hardware products available for persons with disabilities in addition to the accessible options in the Windows and Macintosh operating systems, which can help you customize your computer to fit your needs.

We have the following software and equipment available for persons with a visual impairments. If you are looking for a specific product that is not listed, please call us, we have other resources and may be able to help you find what you are looking for.

The ACT Center recommends an Adaptive Assessment to try the different adaptive products and find a product that specifically meets your needs.

Software

Scanning and Optical Character Recognition (OCR): An optical character recognition (OCR) scanning and literacy program designed to enhance success for individuals with reading challenges and writing difficulties.

Screen Enlargement: A magnifying program that enlarges and enhances everything on the screen.

Screen Reader: A screen reading program, which reads the information from the screen aloud.

Equipment Available for Demonstration

Handheld, Portable and Desktop CCTVs

Amigo Handheld — special LCD screens that can enlarge printed documents.
Closed Circuit Televisions Portable — special televisions that can enlarge printed documents onto a television screen.
Smartview Xtend Desktop — desktop magnifier that enlarges books, pictures, diagrams, charts, etc.

Keyboards

Large Key Keyboards Large Key Keyboards — keyboards that have larger keys for easier computing.

Book Players

Victor Reader Stream Portable Book Player — advanced navigation and SD card slot for storing books, e-text files, music, and voice recordings, and audio bookmarks.

Additional Resources

The ACT Center is a certified Missouri Assistive Technology, Telephone Access Program for the Internet (TAPI) center. If you meet the necessary requirements for the Missouri TAPI program, you may be eligible to receive the adaptive software you are looking for at no charge.
