Technology for Visual Impairments

The ACT Center has a wide range of software and hardware products available for persons with disabilities. As new products emerge each year, we stay up-to-date with the technology.

Although there are accessible options in the Windows and Macintosh operating system, which can help you customize your computer to fit your needs, there are hardware and software which may enhance these options for greater support.

The following software and equipment is for persons with a visual impairment. If you are looking for a specific type of product, read down the list to see if we have it on hand. If it is not listed, please call us, we have many resources which may help you find what you are looking for.

Software

Scanning and Optical Character Recognition (OCR): An optical character recognition (OCR) scanning and literacy program designed to enhance success for individuals with reading challenges and writing difficulties.

Screen Enlargement: A magnifying program that enlarges and enhances everything on the screen.

Screen Reader: A screen reading program, which reads the information from the screen aloud.

Hardware

For those who need other types of accommodations made, the following is a list of hardware which is available:

Closed Circuit Televisions Closed Circuit Televisions — special televisions that can enlarge printed documents onto a television screen.
External Voice Synthesizers External Voice Synthesizers — machines that read the screen when combined with a software speech access programs such as JAWS or Windows-Eyes.
Romeo and Juliet Braille Embosser Romeo and Juliet Braille Embossers — machines that emboss Braille when combined with the Duxury Braille translation software.
Tactile Image Enhancer Tactile Image Enhancer — converts pictures, diagrams, charts, etc. into raised images.

The ACT Center staff members recommend an Adaptive Assessment in order to find a product, to specifically fit your needs.

Additional Resources

The ACT Center is a certified Missouri Assistive Technology, Telephone Access Program for the Internet (TAPI) center. If you meet the necessary requirements for the Missouri TAPI program, you may be eligible to receive the adaptive software you are looking for at no charge.
